No situation is better suited for Mike Leach than Texas Tech. He can be quirky, OK let's be honest, he can be completely odd at a school out in the middle of nowhere that has never had the level of success he's brought. So why would he want to leave?
Leach reportedly flew to Seattle to meet with Washington officials about their opening and it's being reported that Auburn has reached out to people close to Leach to gauge his interest in succeeding Tommy Tuberville, who sources say has been fired after 10 years.
Texas Tech athletic director Gerald Myers is being proactive, saying he's prepared to offer Leach a raise and contract extension "sooner (rather) than later" but really, you have to think that's all that Leach really wanted. He's suddenly on everybody's short list and he simply wants to be paid like it.
Of course, there's always the possibility that Leach realizes that the path to a national title would be easier in the Pac-10, where he only has to deal with one perennial power (USC), rather than Oklahoma and Texas every year. But Washington would take at least 3-4 years for Leach to turn around since the Huskies clearly don't have the players to run his offense (or any other offense for that matter).
Really, it's funny what one season of flirting with a national title can do for a career. Leach used to be a guy with an exciting offense whose teams put up big numbers but couldn't win the big games and now he's a coaching genius. But something tells me Leach will do the smart thing and stay where his act clearly plays and has paid off.
